We started with Akitas in 1978 with a lovely white female from Japan. Being naïve, we bred her just to have puppies and kept a black brindle male. After her death, we sought out another white female and stumbled upon a sound, robust red male with black mask (Kuma). We were talked into showing Kuma and took BOW at our first show! We lost him in October of 2000 at the age of 12-1/2. He was our first show dog, first champion, first Best of Breed winner, first Group Placer and first AOM winner. New to the show ring, we were lucky to find someone who told us how little we knew and guide us in learning about genetics, line-breeding, health concerns, and aspects of conformation, to mention a few areas. With that guidance, we began a process of continued study and formed the basis for our kennel and breeding program. Our Kuma (CH Kamikaze Kuma-Ko AOM) and Buzz (CH White Eagle's Red Jester) finished easily. Our matriarch Tobi (CH Kin Sue's Tobi-Kiri, ROM) hated to show, but we convinced her that she would finish her championship. In limited breeding, she produced a generation of lovely, sweet pups that gave her ROM. Her daughter Lizzie (CH White Eagle's National Velvet) started winning before we were ready. Paris (CH White Eagle's Orient Express) flew to her finish and has the bulk of points needed for a Canadian championship. Another daughter, Topaz (BISS CH White Eagle's Carte Blanche), a multiple Best of Breed winner, was ranked in the top 50 from the classes. She continued in the breed ring and won the Region III Akita Specialty in 2000. Gus (CH White Eagle's Mucho Gusto), who was twice Best in Sweeps, has continued to excel in the ring with multiple Bests of Breed and winning the Working Group. Kuma's granddaughter, Mirage (CH White Eagle's Windsong), also finished easily and is a Best of Breed winner from the classes. The next generations (Tobi's grandkids & Kuma's great-grandkids) are moving into the ring. We were very fortunate to have started with this core of lovely, sound dogs with such wonderful temperaments. |
